Consumer Question: How did this product get a 10 rating with SLS on the ingredient list?

Great question, let’s tackle what SLS is first.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate, synonymously sodium lauryl sulfate, SDS or SLS is a synthetic organic compound used as a common ingredient in many domestic cleaning, personal hygiene, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food products, as well as of industrial and commercial cleaning and product formulations.

SLS should not to be confused with SLES, or Sodium laureth sulfate.

Ingredient Specifics: Sodium Laurel Sufate:
Health Concerns: Sodium Laurel Sulfate is a suspected skin irritant.

Consideration of 3rd-party Product Certifications in  GoodGuide Ratings:

This hand soap made by Method includes SLS in the ingredient list. The health score is not impacted by the presences of this ingredient because the entire formulation has been reviewed by Cradle to Cradle, a third-party certifier, and is determined to be safe.

The Cradle to Cradle Product Standard evaluates material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Products meeting C2C’s material health criteria have fully disclosed every chemical ingredient to a qualified assessor, which has determined that the product should not have any negative impacts on human health or the environment and is among the highest quality on the market.

There are a total of four 3rd-party certifications that can result in an overall rating of 10, when present. These seals include the Cradle to Cradle Certification shown in the example here, EcoLogo, the Green Good Housekeeping Seal, and EPA Safer Choice.
